The Impact of the Implementation of the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive 2014/89/EU on
Fisheries in Selected Fishing Areas and Sea Basins
Description: The research team evaluated the effectiveness and coherence of the current MSP framework. By utilizing a combination of extensive stakeholder interviews and desk research, the study provides a grounded perspective on how maritime space is shared among competing interests like offshore energy, conservation, and food production. To ensure a diverse representation of European coastal dynamics, the team conducted six in-depth regional case studies:
- Baltic Sea: Assessing cross-border cooperation and environmental targets.
- English Channel: Evaluating high-density maritime traffic and fishing zones.
- Bay of Biscay: Analyzing the integration of traditional fishing fleets.
- North Coast of Portugal: Focusing on Atlantic aquaculture potential.
- North and Central Adriatic Sea: Addressing space competition in semi-enclosed seas.
- Aegean Sea: Exploring MSP implementation in complex archipelagic waters.
